Frequently Asked Questions – EFI General
You need the low-vac switch so the converter will unlock in low vacuum situations, such as going up hill and heavy throttle. The brake cancel switch unlocks the TCC when the brakes are applied. Trucks that came stock with R4 trannys came with a low-vacuum switch and a brake cancel switch. The stock low-vac switch didn’t let the TCC unlock soon enough with this mod. I checked the vacuum on the stock switch and it kicked in at 3. The vacuum switch I recommend works real well as it kicks in at 7. The brake cancel switch on R4 equipped trucks also disconnects the cruise control if equipped when the brakes are applied. Are you are doing this mod for one of the reasons I did, to get rid of some of the wiring and vacuum hoses that came on our trucks. This is one of the reasons I did this.

Can you tell me what would be involved in putting a turbo trans behind a olds cubic inch motor? Modern ATF fluids further degrade shift performance. Making an upgrade to a TH transmission would certainly improve performance and reliability, although I would suggest going one step further and adding overdrive with the use of a r4 or 4L60 transmission.
The original Slim Jim transmission is a relatively narrow transmission and upgrading to the TH may require some modifications to the transmission tunnel in your floor, A TH may be an easier fit and can be built to handle most anything you throw at it. The next challenge is connecting the engine to the transmission.
A: This kit contains all the parts and hardware to hook up any column shifter to any GM transmission, 3 or 4 speed, regardless if the shifter was for a 3 or 4 speed. The key is out billet aluminum splined button.
But were the old days really that good? I would argue, at least when it comes to automatic transmissions that they were not. Most early transmissions had two or three speeds. None had an overdrive gear. The lack of an overdrive gear is what makes these older transmissions less than desirable. Because they lacked an overdrive gear, these cars got terrible mileage and turned very high rpms at highway speeds.
They just were not fun to drive because of this. Modern overdrive transmissions are pretty easy to retrofit into older cars, thanks to the many companies in the automotive aftermarket. Back in the day, converting your shifter from a two or three speed to a four speed was a major headache. They developed shifters that were designed just for transmission transplants. They used flexible cables instead of solid rods, allowing the end user to place the shifter pretty much where ever they wanted to.
Most of these shifters include cools features such as reverse lock outs and came with both brake light and neutral safety switches.

Start to finish Remove the loom and tape. I left the trans wiring loomed as it pretty much isnt changed even with the new layout Begin to coil up the connectors. Some wires should nearly be free just by removing the loom.
Apr 01, · Hello all, I just installed a r4 in my 55 Chevy and am stumped.. I am trying to hook up the TV cable to the trany, which looks like a fairly easy installation by various online videos, yet where the cable is suppose to be installed it appears there is a metal plug in hole keeping me from hooking up .
The similar pickup truck models had switched to the newer platforms in the model year. Both 2WD and 4WD models, designated “C” and “K”, were offered, as well as half ton and three-quarter ton ” ” and ” ” models. The base engine for all variants was the small-block 5. Ground clearance was 6. The manual transmission option from the previous generation was dropped. The GMT series introduced independent front suspension.

When the solenoid is engaged, fluid is applied to the torque converter clutch, creating lockup and a direct link between the engine and transmission. This feature is often controlled by the vehicle’s computer when certain conditions are met, however this can be bypassed, and a toggle switch can be used to control torque converter lockup anytime the driver wishes. Put on safety glasses and place a large drain pan under the transmission pan.
The transmission swap in my ’81 is finally completed. Well I had some bigger hurdles to overcome but the car is running again. The main obstacle was that the R4 does not just bolt in and the only way to make it work was to modify the transmission crossmember.
My entire plan is to grab my dads drive train just for the hell of it. He bought the truck when I was born almost 19 years ago now and he’s tired of it so he is parting it out but I’m taking the drive-train. I am going to go ahead and rebuild that , not sure how bad it actually is but I know it has had a piston slap for while so I imagine it will need to be bored a little. I’m pretty good when it comes to older chevy motors and I figure why not go ahead and make the tbi motor carbureted build it how I know, drop it in my camaro and start building that LT1 how I really want to.
I know most people might think it is a waste but it will allow me to keep driving my car and be able to dump the money into the LT1. I really think this will be my best bet instead of trying to rig things, I really want to do this car right, unlike what I used to do with the lifted chevys I drove in high school. I think it sounds like a plan Quote: Originally Posted by kwacasey View Post I have a 93 Z28, so if you go ahead and decide to make the r4 swap and need some pics for reference or anything like that please feel free to contact me.
I just pulled and rebuilt my 4L60, which is very similar to your r4, think 4L60E with a r4 valve body. If you use the r4 get the electrical plug if you can as you will need to convert it to work with your current wiring.
rough idle, stalling, loss of power.
December 02, , I still have the factory harness for lock-up but I’m pretty sure the vacuum switch will need replaced, and the male plug on the harness and female plug on the transmission will have to be replaced I think it will be cleaner and easier to hook up. I have seen the how-to on making your own kit floating around this forum, but I really don’t want to use vacuum for the lockup. I then found a kit from Monster Transmissions that is vacuum free, but has a manual lockup switch you mount in the cab.
I really don’t want to have to mount a switch anywhere in the cab as I like it to be as stock looking as possible inside, and I just removed 30 pounds of SunPro gauges and wiring so I don’t want to add another switch to the dash.
The should be used in conjunction with transmission kickdown / throttle cable brackets such as Holley PN (steel) or the Holley PN and (aluminum) brackets. NOTE: The is not designed for use with some early model Holley carbs, Holley Dominator, Chrysler or Ford.
By Jefferson Bryant January 23, Hot rods are all about personality. The transmission rarely gets much more than a single thought: For the purpose of this story, we are going to throw out the whole stick-shift thing; this story is all about high-performance overdrive automatics. Modern automatic transmissions go far beyond the old slushbox technology inside the typical TH or C4 you find in most hot rods.
With great power comes great responsibility…oh, wait, wrong story. Knowing that these guys have more overdrive gearboxes running around some seriously heavy-hitting powerplants, we knew these were the guys to hit up. Gearstar uses top-shelf components in their performance transmissions. Red oxide clutches, performance steels and billet servos make a big difference in the longevity and power handling of a transmission.
Avoiding Parasitic Loss It is a well-known fact that transmissions eat up power; it is just a fact of gearhead life. The less efficient a transmission is, the more you have to put into the engine to make up for it. This can be a real drag pun intended. The problem is that it eats up so much power because of those heavy duty internals.
will not shift into 3rd just slips.
We offer several versions of this trans for applications up to horsepower. This trans has a low first gear ratio of 3. This trans was built with a Chevy only bolt pattern, but we have a package for Buick, Olds, Pontiac, and Cadillac people so you can enjoy the benefits of this excellent transmission too. We also provide a custom rebuild service for those interested in keeping the original trans but need an upgraded version to handle additional power mods.
Call for more details. The built-in display and keypad lets the user adjust and tune for their specific application and diagnose problems should they occur.
Aug 24, · the R4 tranny and B&M Megashifter i used came from my Trans Am. installing the tranny was easy. put the tranny up and install the bellhousing bolts. i had to clearance the passenger side of the tunnel a tiny bit with a prybar, but i assume that was because i .
Installing Your New Transmission When your install the torque convert in the transmission, engage the converter in the front pump. Using the palm of your hand put it on the converter pilot and lift slightly to bring it up to center. Push and rotate the converter at the same time. This can be tricky, but it is the method that works best. Make sure you remove the TV and dipstick rubber seals and install them in the transmission first, or you could damage the seals.
The best way to hook up the TV cable is to hold the carburetor wide open, check that the TV cable has also been pulled wide open and lock it down. Carburetor is wide open and the TV cable is pulled wide open.
