This is based of “Speed Dating” where everyone gets minutes to talk to a person and then they ring a bell and you move to the next person to talk to and so on. We had two rows of chairs set up to face each other and then had one row move down a seat each time. All the ladies loved having the chance to get to know each other better and it was fun to hear all that chatting going on! We are working on solving systems of equations and started out by solving via graphing. This way they truly understand what they are finding when solving a system. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups. Look at them working so hard! I made 12 sets of different equations and numbered each set. I then handed out a set to each group being mindful of the level of difficulty when I initially handed them out.
When they were done I checked their answers and helped clear up any mistakes. After students had become experts at their problem, I had the student sitting In the middle isle change desks behind them so they were sitting with a new person that had a different problem. They students then exchanged note cards and solved the new problem. Also I knew the correct answer was their as well. Fun things I saw — it was fun seeing students who sometimes struggle helping other students who were stuck on their expert problem.
It was fun seeing the confidence level increase in solving these problems after a few dating rotations.

I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own.
I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes.
Separate reserved pool tables for SPEED-DATING teams of 2 Men and 2 Women in appropriate age groups. After completing the first game, gentlemen will rotate to the next table to challenge the next team of women in their age group.
I found an idea from Twitter and decided to try it out myself in the classroom. I am always looking for new ways to review material before a test. Lots of stuff gets old really fast with as many tests as we give. Fortunately, this is a new activity I like and the students like it too. It is more of a “speed-networking” exercise, which is becoming more and more popular in the business world as a way for clients to meet a lot of prospective businesses at once.

Each month has a different theme with a corresponding activity. Last night we played SPEED FRIEND-SHIPPING and it was a blast!!
